AFrom an article from the Courier Times Dizzying start for shop owner HERE you can read the whole article

M. Night Shyamalan, writer and director of films including "The Sixth Sense" and "Unbreakable," wanted to use her shop in a scene for his new movie "Signs." It stars Mel Gibson and Joaquin Phoenix.

"I bought the business because I liked it; the movie was just a bonus," she said. "It was good advertisement for us, because we were in the paper every day.

"It was unbelievable how many people took pictures of our place. It got to the point where we would look up and it was flash after flash," Longosky said. "Before and after the movie was shot, people would just pull up, get out of their car, take a picture of them standing in front of our shop and drive away. If I charged for pictures, I'd probably have the store paid off by now."

It was fun meeting the movie stars and seeing the process of shooting a film, she said. And although Mel wasn't very talkative, his co-star liked to gab.

"The crew that shot here was great. Mel wasn't very personable, but that was OK. [Phoenix] really was personable. He couldn't thank us enough," she said.

Since Phoenix is a vegetarian, the Longoskys checked for meat content in everything they served just to be sure that the actor could enjoy their pizza.

"He was very thankful. All in all, it was a great experience," Longosky said.

18-10-Signs - Joaquin Phoenix kept a low profile being spotted slipping out of a trailer and into a black van at one point (Thanks to Marissa for this :))

18-09-Rory Culkin, the youngest member of the acting clan, has been set to star with Mel Gibson and Joaquin Phoenix in ``Signs,'' the M. Night Shyamalan drama which is about to go into production at Touchstone.

Here an unofficial site for Sings fro the UK  http://www.signsmovie.co.uk/news.html

From that unofficial site: Apparently Mark Ruffalo's role called for intensive sports training, which he was not up to following the recent removal of a minor cyst from his inner ear. So I guess Joaquin Phoenix is down the gym as I type!

Cast and crew are now on location in Bucks County. Filming started as scheduled on Thursday 13th Sept unaffected by recent tragic events. The shoot was meant to be launched on Weds 12th with a low key local press conference in Philadelphia with Shymalan, Gibson and Phoenix in attendance but this was canceled in light of recent events.

ANY POST: "Inqlings" section by Michael Klien on page D2 again. It says: Actor Joaquin Phoenix and sister Liberty Butterfly played baseball yesterday in Fairmount Park. Nice day, right? Shooting is scheduled to start today on Signs, the M. Night Shyamalan flick pairing Mel Gibson and Joaquin.

27-09-Initial reports indicated that the movie would be released next Fall/Winter around November, but we've now heard that the revised release date will be in the Summer of 2002 probably around August. This makes more sense to us as it means the marketing campaign will coincide with the 2002 crop circle season here in the UK and the US and the release of the movie will coincide with the traditional climax of the season in August. From the Unofficial Signs UK site.

25-09-... Patricia Kalember (''thirtysomething,'' ``Sisters''), stage thesp Cherry Jones (''Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood'') and newcomer Abigail Breslin have joined Mel Gibson, Joaquin Phoenix and Rory Culkin in M. Night Shyamalan's thriller ''Signs.'' The Disney thriller is shooting in and around Philadelphia through mid-November.

21-09-Out and around

Director M. Night Shyamalan, taking a breather from filming Signs in Bucks County, treated about 30 friends and film types (some from his previous films The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable) to dinner Saturday in the private vault at Circa (1518 Walnut St.). Also along was Joaquin Phoenix, who is costarring in Signs. He canoodled with a friend and chain-smoked, a curious health-style choice given that he's a vegan.

08-09-According to Dark Horizons, Oscar-nominated actor Joaquin Phoenix (Gladiator, The Yards) will replace the ailing Mark Ruffalo (one of Phoenix's competitors in the Best Supporting Actor category at this year's Academy Awards) in writer-director M. Night Shyamalan's supernatural drama Signs. The report indicates that Phoenix will play star Mel Gibson's brother. (Shouldn't it be as his son?!) Circlemakers.org claims that the approximately nine-week shoot is scheduled to begin September 13 with the bulk of filming taking place "on 100 acres of corn fields leased to the production until the end of the year by Delaware Valley College in Doylestown, Pennsylvania." They also report that additional filming will be done in parts of New York state and in Newton, PA.

Joaquin Phoenix's credits include 8mm, To Die For, Quills, and the forthcoming Buffalo Soldiers.

05-09-Phoenix 'Signs' to spell Ruffalo in Dis thriller
Sep. 05, 2001

Joaquin Phoenix has been tapped to replace Mark Ruffalo in M. Night Shyamalan's upcoming feature "Signs" for the Walt Disney Co. The project is set to start shooting this month.

Ruffalo was forced to drop out last week for health reasons following surgery to remove a cyst from his inner ear (HR 8/30). Phoenix will star in the role opposite Mel Gibson.

Although the project is being guarded closely, it is described as a supernatural thriller focusing on the sudden appearance of mysterious crop circles on a family farm in Bucks County, Pa.

Producing "Signs" are Shyamalan, Frank Marshall and Sam Mercer along with executive producer Kathleen Kennedy -- the same team that collaborated on Shyamalan's 1999 sleeper hit "The Sixth Sense." Touchstone Pictures has slated "Signs" for a 2002 release.

The casting move comes on the eve of the world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival of Phoenix's "Buffalo Soldiers," a dark war comedy in which he stars opposite Ed Harris.

Phoenix, co-repped by CAA and Iris Burton, was nominated for an Academy Award for his performance opposite Russell Crowe in DreamWorks/Universal Pictures' "Gladiator," which won the Oscar for best picture.

His other recent credits include "Quills" and "The Yards," and Phoenix recently wrapped shooting "It's All About Love" for director Thomas Vinterberg.

Shyamalan sees 'Signs' point to thesp Phoenix
'Gladiator' actor to replace Ruffalo

By MICHAEL FLEMING

NEW YORK -- Joaquin Phoenix will star with Mel Gibson in "Signs," the supernatural thriller written and to be directed this fall by M. Night Shyamalan for Touchstone.

Phoenix, Oscar-nominated for his work in "Gladiator," will replace Mark Ruffalo, who was forced to ankle the project because he is recovering from a minor ear operation.

"Signs," which will begin shooting in October, is set in Bucks County, Pa., and revolves around the mysterious appearance of an array of enormous circles and lines carved into the crops of a farm family. Frank Marshall, Kathleen Kennedy and Sam Mercer will produce.

While fall greenlights have been somewhat rare because of labor unrest in the spring, Disney execs found themselves with a plum picture when it made an eight-figure deal with Shyamalan the moment he delivered his finished screenplay (Daily Variety, April 26).

The studio moved decisively to lock down the picture by the filmmakers whose past two efforts for the studio, "The Sixth Sense" and "Unbreakable," posted a collective worldwide gross north of $900 million.

Since "Gladiator," Phoenix has starred in the Gregor Jordan-directed "Buffalo Soldiers," which is playing at the Toronto Film Festival, and recently completed "It's All About Love," starring with Claire Danes for director Thomas Vinterberg.

Phoenix is repped by the Iris Burton Agency and CAA.

Joaquin Phoenix who was recently nominated for a best supporting actor Oscar for his portrayal of the Emperor in Ridley Scott's blockbuster Gladiator will now play Mel Gibson's brother in Signs. He replaces Mark Ruffalo (see below) who had to drop out of the project due to illness.

The main shoot for Signs will take place on 100 acres of corn fields leased to the production until the end of the year by Delaware Valley College in Doylestown, Pennsylvania (pictured above). The shoot is scheduled to start on September 13th 2001 and filming should last for about nine weeks. Additional scenes will be shot at several locations in nearby Newtown. The film is set to bring an economic windfall to the area generating an estimated 20 million for the local economy. Which coincidently, is also rumoured to be the amount Mel Gibson is receiving for starring in the movie. Odd fact, Shyamalan is looking to cast a 7ft woman in the movie! Before moving to Pennsylvania, shooting started in New York state which - for the purpose of the shoot - was masquerading as indian farmland!

MAY 2001: It's been a long time coming but Hollywood has finally smelt the coffee and decided to bankroll a blockbuster movie about the crop circle phenomenon. Manoj Nelliyattu Shyamalan aka M Night Shyamalan (pictured above), the writer/director behind the blockbusters "The Sixth Sense" and more recently "Unbreakable" which collectively grossed more than one billion dollars worldwide presented Disney with his new script titled "Signs" - which is centered around the crop circle mystery - on Saturday 21st April 2001 with the ink still drying. The studio bosses were so impressed with the script that they preemptively closed an eight-figure deal with Shyamalan the following Sunday morning (haven't they heard of the day of rest?) Shyamalan received $10 million upfront for Unbreakable, and it's safe to assume that "Signs" would have been bought for an equivalent - if not larger - sum. The "Unbreakable" deal, which included $5 million for his script, broke the script auction record previously held by Shane Black, who received $4 million from New Line Cinema for "The Long Kiss Goodnight."

At this stage little is know about the plot of the movie which is being closely guarded but, like "The Sixth Sense" and "Unbreakable", the film is a thriller set in Shyamalan's home state of Pennsylvania. "Signs" takes place in Bucks County and revolves around the sudden appearance of mysterious crop circles at a family's farm.

Mel Gibson (pictured above) will star in "Signs" as the farmer whose land the circles appear on. Rising Hollywood star Mark Ruffalo (pictured below) has also been asked to co-star alongside Gibson. He has just completed work on "A View From the Top" alongside Gwyneth Paltrow and John Woo's new movie "Windtalkers" alongside Nicolas Cage. (Update: Ruffalo had to drop out of the project in late August 2001 due to illness.) Filming is scheduled to start in Philadelphia in mid-September with a nine-week shoot. The current estimated release date for the movie is November 2002.

This won't be the first time a crop circle has appeared in a movie. The 1999 Danish film "Mifune's Last Song" featured a crop circle but it was by no means central to the plot.

Also, there have been several near misses: the directors of the 1997 feature "Contact" starring Jodie Foster collected crop circle information but decided not to use it in the final cut of the movie. Circlemakers Doug Bower and Dave Chorley were in talks with an unnamed famous British director in the early nineties about bringing their story to the screen but the project never came to fruition. We've also been approached several times over the years by representatives of Fox and Barry Levinson asking if we would be interested in helping develop a script.

Crop circles have already made it to the small screen, beyond the numerous documentaries and news items made about them over the years, they've also been fictionalised and featured in Sci-Fi series. "The X Files" featured circles during its seventh season in an episode called 'All Things'. Circlemakers.org even gets a plug in the documentation about the episode on the 'X-Files' website. (Pictured above is the 'virtual' formation that appeared in the show). Circles also featured prominently in the cult Sci-Fi series 'Dark Skies' cropping up in several episodes including the pilot 'The Awakening" - directed by Tobe Hooper of 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre Fame' - 'Inhuman Nature' which ties the crop circle phenomenon into the macabre practice of cattle mutilation and in "Shades of Gray" in which some of the shows characters decide to create their very own crop circle in the hope of luring an alien spaceship to land!

So, twenty five years after the circles started appearing here in the UK, it's good to finally see a film project based around the circles get the green light.
