Tuesday, August 14, 2001 - Word around the campfire is that Denver and Colorado will be locations for the movie "Brokeback Mountain," about two lovesick cowpokes, to be filmed early next year.
Call me crazy, but this project sounds pretty high risk, even if it is rife with Denver connections, which we always like to see.
"Brokeback Mountain" was a celebrated 1998 short story by former Denver resident Annie Proulx, who used to keep a loft in LoDo. It's in her Pulitzer-finalist collection, "Close Range," which was was illustrated by LoDo artist William Matthews.
The story concerns two Wyoming cowboy/shepherds who find themselves branded by love. In the haunting ending, one is murdered for being gay. Uncannily, the story came out a year before Matthew Shepard was killed in Wyoming, part of the reason it caused such a buzz. The other reason was, it garnered O. Henry and National Magazine awards.
Gus Van Sant was said to be on tap to direct "Brokeback," which would make sense, since he was the force behind such edgy flicks as "Drugstore Cowboy" and "My Own Private Idaho."
But I hear the helm's now switched to Joel Schumacher ("Batman and Robin").
Huh?
And Larry McMurtry is writing the screenplay.
Double huh?
There's a precedent for such a project being filmed here in Colorado. Denver was the locale for HBO's movie about the Shepard murder, "The Laramie Project," earlier this year.
Still, you have to wonder what Hollywood leading man will want to tackle the daring role of a gay cowboy. (Read the story - you'll understand what I mean.)
I hear Joaquin Phoenix has signed on.

Brokeback Mountain: The New Weekly reports that after the huge success of
"Good Will Hunting", it is not surprising that rumours are flying of
director Gus Van Sant and stars Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are teaming up again
for "Brokeback Mountain" - one of the next films on Van Sant's
schedule after he finishes remaking "Psycho". The bound to cause a
stir film follows "two coyboys who spend their days fighting Indians, and
their nights fighting their passion for each other" (which one's the butch
half?). But if Van Sant wants them for the film, can he get them? Bothstars
schedules are pretty much booked solid for some time, but one day soon the duo
could be locking lips on screen. Wonder if Winona or Gwyneth will cameo? This is

A Toronto filmfestival is next month 6-15 september
Film Four, headed by Paul Webster, next produces the Joaquin Phoenix starrer "Buffalo Soldier," which will receive its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival next month.
Buffalo Soldiers has apparently not found a distributer for the USA yet
It may be released in Europe begin 2002, let's hope it will be soon

Vinterberg is making a film in Copenhagen
Hollywood-stars in Denmark: Claire Danes and Joaquin Phoenix starring as a
couple in the new film "It´s all about love" by the Danish film
director Thomas Vinterberg. The film is produced by Nimbus Film. The shootings
will take place in Copenhagen, "Film i Väst" in Sweden and New York.
The premiere is set to the Film Festival of Cannes next year.
