Brian Ellsworth (River Phoenix), a junior high school student, seems to have everything going for him. He is bright enough to quote Hamlet, and do math problems in his head. He is responsible enough to care for his younger brother, Robbie (Joaquin "Leaf" Phoenix) while his father is out of town and his mother is at work. He is goodlooking and charming enough to attract the attention of girls (Stephanie Evans). He is a fast enough runner to qualify for the track team. But Brian has a problem: he has difficulty learning to read and write.
